Automatic generation of Manufacturing Execution Systems

Project concept AutoMES

The industrial food production is made of complex processes. It is necessary to make all process steps in the production transparent in order to control the quality, efficiency and resource consumption. For this purpose, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are used. Due to the customizing of MES for each production system, the MES are quite costly to purchase and to maintain because of high personal costs for programming. Therefore, they can only been applied for the small and medium enterprises as an isolated solution.

In project AutoMES (automatic generation of MES) a more cost effective approach for linking food production with MES will be sought for. This project aims at reducing the complexity of programming, commissioning and maintenance of MES.

To achieve this objective, a set of function packages are constructed in the project (Figure 1). The Idea is, that a end-user could specify a MES for his plant. He use the “intelligent specification generator” to model his plants and processes on the on hand. On the other hand he model MES-Functions which he want´s to have in his system. For modelling he could use some libraries. I.e. the plant libraries is a collection of different machines, which could be parameterized for the specific task. The result of the specification generator is a “generic MES-specification”. In this part the specific MES is descripted included all MES-Functions, plant- and process- model. The description could be used by any MES builder and with code generators could be build a MES automatically.

In the project the whole process will be validated with three project partners. A brewery, a diary production and a juice filling line. All results of the project should be incorporated into industry standards and can be used by IT vendors for new MES products. Therefore, the costs for MES can be reduced approximately by 50 %. In this way, more than 5800 food companies in Germany as well as a share of 90 % in small and medium enterprises can benefit from using MES to manage their production.

Until now, there are two MES-Functions in the MES-Library, namely analysis of OEE-Indicators and management of energy. As an example, the method of calculating OEE-Indicators in the framework of AutoMES will be introduced.
